Military Dental Insurance

There are many benefits for those who serve in the military and their dependants and one of these is insurance. Military dental insurance is provided to eligible enrollees through the Tricare Dental Program and United Concordia. Those who are in the military, serving on active duty, in all seven uniformed services including the reserves and guard, and their dependants are entitled to services provided through Tricare that covers 100% for many services and others that may include a low share percentage.

The seven branches of the uniformed services are as follows: U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). There are certain restrictions that determine who is or isn’t eligible for military dental insurance so check the criteria first.

Tricare military dental insurance is a voluntary program available to all active duty members and their eligible dependents. Tricare provides comprehensive coverage and includes services such as crowns, root canals, extractions, preventative care, medical dental services and the cost of anesthesia. Other services include braces, gum surgery (periodontics), fillings, examinations, fluorides, cleanings, sealants and x-rays. As with all insurance plans make certain to determine what services are covered free of charge and which are provided through a share of cost.

The U.S. Government shares expenses for both premiums and certain cost-shares for services. Military dental insurance provides excellent coverage for a low, minimal cost. Those who are serving overseas will also need to determine what benefits are covered and ensure that they have adequate medical and dental coverage for themselves and their family members.

If you are eligible for military dental insurance you’ll find that enrolling is simple and you can enroll online through the official website, through postal mail, or you may complete the enrollment forms and send them to United Concordia via fax. It’s important to enroll in Tricare military dental insurance as early as possible as this will prevent the possibility of gaps or delays in your coverage from arising.

Once you enroll and your first or initial premium payment is accepted, you’ll be given an effective date of coverage. This is the date when you will be able to use the insurance plan. Typically, coverage will begin the first day of the month following payment unless your payment was accepted after the 20th of a month. If that is the case, your coverage would typically begin on the first day of the second month following. Those who are successfully enrolled in Tricare military dental insurance will receive confirmation as well as an official dental identification card. It is imperative that those who are in the process of enrollment seek dental services only after they have received their official dental identification card and have confirmed their enrollment.

There is a maximum yearly benefit of $1,200 for routine or general dental care and maximum lifetime orthodontic benefit coverage of $1,500. The military provides lower cost policies depending upon military rank. There’s no doubt that there are many advantages for those in the military and health and military dental insurance is just one of those benefits.

Though Tricare is available by choice some military personnel may find that it makes sense to use Tricare as a supplementary medical dental insurance that is combined with other plans. No matter which insurance you are using, ensure that you are fully aware of what services are provided, what is excluded and what limits are currently in place. Military dental insurance may not cover a variety of procedures deemed cosmetic so make certain to determine beforehand what type of coverage you need and which plan is best suited for your personal situation.

In addition to military dental insurance, Tricare also provides vision coverage as well. It is important that military members and their dependents take full advantage of the insurance opportunities provided to them and remain in good health. Tricare is low cost and a great way to ensure that a military family has access to the general dental care they need at either a low price or for free.
