California Health Care Insurance for Poor Kids

If you and your family reside in the state of California and cannot afford health insurance, there are programs to help you. California health care insurance for poor kid families can be obtained from a variety of sources. One is Medi-Cal, which is Medicaid in California. Since 1966 this program has served residents who cannot afford traditional health insurance. This might include those who are not provided health insurance through their employer, and/or those who cannot afford to purchase it from a traditional insurance agency.

Medi-Cal offers medical care for families and individuals who are low-income. Some of these people are those with children, pregnant women, senior citizens, foster care children, disabled individuals and those with certain diseases that include but are not limited to breast cancer, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. The program gets equal financing from both the federal and state government. If you want to apply for Medi-Cal, do so at the nearest Health and Human Services office. You will be assigned a case worker who will help you with your application if needed, go over all the information and assist you through the process.

In order to get this and other types of low income health care, you will need to provide verifications of certain things, such as your identity and your income. You may be asked to bring in your drivers license or photo identification, Social Security card, check stubs or proof of unemployment, child support documents if you receive child support, proof of expenses like rent and utilities, and bank statements. These are only examples of what you will most likely be asked to bring; your case worker will tell you exactly what you need to do.

After you complete your application it will be reviewed and within a certain time frame as designated by your worker, usually no more than a few weeks, a decision will be made and you will be notified whether you are approved or denied. If approved, you will get a letter stating how much medical assistance you get and who in your family is approved. It will specify how long the coverage lasts and if there are any co-payments on prescription drugs. You will be required to re-verify your information periodically to ensure you still qualify for the program.

If you are denied for Medi-Cal and still cannot afford California health care insurance for poor kid families, consider other options. There may be free clinics in your area who can see you and provide your medications that base their rates on your income. You might also want to speak to a human services worker about any other options that may be available. If you have to purchase health insurance, get plenty of free quotes before choosing a company and a policy.
